The Beast of White Orchard is one of the first quests that you get to complete within The Witcher 3, but that doesn’t mean that it will be simple or short. In the quest, you’ll find yourself chasing clues throughout White Orchard, a small area that has been ransacked by Nilfgaardian soldiers and an angry griffin. Below you will learn how to complete The Beast of White Orchard in The Witcher 3.
Completing The Beast of White Orchard
Your first step is to ask the hunter where he found the bodies. Previously, a hunter had claimed to have found Nilfgaard soldiers’ bodies left behind by the griffin. You need to ask the hunter where he found them so that you can track down the griffin. However, it won’t be so simple.
When you arrive, you will quickly find that the door to the hunter’s house is locked and the hunter is nowhere to be found. Using your Witcher Senses, you must track down the hunter. You will see the hunters tracks highlighted in red as you follow them into the woods.
When you arrive at the hunter’s location, he will be willing to tell you what you need to know, but not before you help him out with something first. A pack of wild dogs are quickly approaching and you must take care of them first.
After you make quick work of taking down the wild dogs, you finally have a moment of free time to speak to the hunter. Walk up to the hunter and talk to him using the button or key that is prompted when you approach.
After speaking to the hunter, he agrees to help you by letting you know where he found the Nilfgaard soldiers’ bodies. However, rather than just telling you, he will show you where the bodies were and will ask you to follow him. At this point, follow the hunter through the woods to the location the bodies were found.
When you arrive at the site of the Nilfgaardian Solders’ death, examine the area with your Witcher Senses. You will notice many different things out of place. First, there will be large pools of blood, a bottle, and a small campfire. Examine each of there by approaching them and using the prompted button to examine them.
Additionally, you will notice some tracks on the ground highlighted in red, just like the ones you found of the hunter previously in the quest. Follow these tracks into the woods and to the source of the attack.
If you follow the Nilfgaard tracks to where they end, you will find yourself in the nest of the griffins who have been terrorizing the town. Here, there will be plenty of things to examine. Search the griffins’ nest for clues. You will find a pile of bones, a Nilfgaard soldier’s body, and a griffin’s body. Examine each of them to move onto the next quest objecting in The Beast of the White Orchard.
Now, it’s time to head back to the area you passed with the herbalist’s hut on your way to find the hunter in the first portion of the quest. Make your way to the herbalist and head inside when you arrive. Speak to her to find out what you can about Buckthorn.
The herbalist will tell you that you can find Buckthorn nearby, on the riverbed. Now, you’ll need to head to the riverbed and search for Buckthorn using your Witcher Senses. This will require you to dive under the water, so be sure to watch your oxygen bar to make sure you aren’t underwater for too long, otherwise you may drown.
Now, it’s time to head back to the inn to speak to Vesemir. Tell him about your plans, your discoveries, and find out what his thoughts are. He will tell you that you’re on the right track and you should start right away, assuming you have all the information and resources you need, which you do at this point.
It’s time to get some preparation finished. This part is simple, since you only need to do one thing to prepare to fight the griffin, and you already have the resources. Head to the Alchemy tab in your menu and craft the Thunderbolt Potion. While this isn’t necessary to win the fight, it’s still necessary to progress in the quest.
Now, you must meet Vesemir in the field where you plan to ambush the griffin. Not long after you meet him, you will talk for some time, and eventually the griffin will show up to take the bait you left for him, which is your cue to take down the Beast of White Orchard.
Before the battle begins, Vesemir will hand you a crossbow for you to use against the griffin. The crossbow will allow you to attack the griffin both on the ground and while it is soaring through the air and attempting to dive at you.
After you finally defeat the griffin, you will have to take a trophy from it so that you can prove to the Nilfgaardians that you really did defeat the Beast of White Orchard. When you approach the defeated griffin, you will be able to loot it. Collect all the items on its body, including the Griffin trophy that can be found at the bottom of the list.
Now, head back to collect your reward from the Nilfgaardians. When you arrive, you will be in the middle of someone getting scolded for bringing rotten grain, which results in 15 lashes for the poor guy. However, you will learn that Yennefer is only a day’s ride from you and has been this whole time.
Make your way back to the inn to prepare to leave White Orchard with Vesemir. Here, you will witness a cutscene that leaves the innkeep blkeeding and broken over attempting to keep the peace in her inn. By the end of it, you will have completed The Beast of White Orchard in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
